Rep. Slaughter Presents $100,000 to PAL
Buffalo, Falls PALs to get $100,000 each for programs
Police Athletic League after-school programs for at-risk young people in Buffalo and Niagara Falls will benefit from $200,000 in federal funding announced Monday by Rep. Louise M. Slaughter, D-Fairport.
Slaughter said the Police Athletic Leagues in each city would receive a total of $100,000, which was included in the federal government’s appropriations for 2009 for juvenile justice. Some of the money already has been received.
In Buffalo, the funds are being used for programs at seven community centers, including basketball and baseball leagues, summer camps and clinics, skating and tennis programs and one of the only youth boxing programs in Western New York.
In Niagara Falls, the grant supports scholarships, safe driving and peer literacy programs, as well as basketball, soccer and lacrosse. Both leagues honored Slaughter with a plaque at Monday’s announcement in the Niagara Falls High School
